Writer for hire

Well, I've done it. After years of telling myself that freelance life probably isn't for me, I've arrived at the conclusion that perhaps, maybe, it is.

I've gone and done the responsible thing and quit my full-time (with benefits) job. And I say "perhaps" freelance is for me because today only marks day one in my new home office. (And of course by home office I mean my new desk in the corner of the living room.)

Many challenges lay ahead, but that's exactly why I've decided to give this a real shot. The challenges will largely be self-imposed, from brainstorming fresh ideas each and every day to pitching to juggling multiple assignments from different editors with competing deadlines.

Watch this space for all manner of musings, including learning to run my own business (STEPS ONE THROUGH INFINITY: save the receipt, save the receipt, save the receipt), the stories behind my stories, and some news and notes from around the world that have caught my eye.

Here goes nothing...

This is one of more than 200 takes from a shoot I did with photographer Helen Tansey. I hate having my picture taken, but Helen put me at ease.
